Hotels in Stuttgart: prices, timing and areas
Stuttgart is the capital of Baden-Württemberg, set in the Neckar valley and ringed by green hills, known above all for the car industry. It is a city of business and trade fairs, where people come for conferences and the Mercedes and Porsche museums, but also for concerts, wine and walks in the old town. Most guests aim for Stuttgart-Mitte, close to the Schlossplatz square and the Königstraße promenade. The price of a room depends heavily on the fair calendar: in fair season rates rise sharply, and business guests fill the city midweek. This list has 400 properties, from a cheap chain to five stars in the centre. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Stuttgart: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Stuttgart for less
In Stuttgart the trade fairs set the price. It is dearest in March, in the spring fair season, when rates rise by more than two thirds against the rest of the year. It is cheapest in August, during the holidays, when fair traffic dies down. Unlike touristy cities, it is expensive midweek here, when business guests arrive: Tuesday is the dearest and Thursday the cheapest. Stuttgart is booked ahead, especially for big fairs and concerts. For a good price, be ready about three months out.
What a stay costs by property type
Stuttgart has a large hotel market geared to business travel, so chains and mid-range hotels dominate, with the top end set by a few boutique and five-star hotels in the centre. The cheapest sleep is in budget chains on the edge and by the airport; you pay the most in design hotels on Königstraße. Below are indicative nightly rates outside the fair weeks.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Budget chain hotel or hostel | from approx. EUR 27 |
| Aparthotel or three-star hotel | from approx. EUR 46 |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. EUR 63 |
| Boutique or upper-tier hotel | from approx. EUR 80 |
| Five-star or premium hotel | from approx. EUR 99 |

Where a stay costs more and where it is cheaper
Most properties cluster in Stuttgart-Mitte, the inner centre around the Schlossplatz square and the Königstraße promenade, close to the museums, theatres and shops. It is the handiest but also the priciest area. Across the way, in Bad Cannstatt by the Neckar, you will find mineral spas, the Mercedes-Benz Arena and the festival grounds, often a little cheaper. Zuffenhausen is the Porsche district with the brand museum, while budget chains cluster in Feuerbach and by the airport and fairgrounds. With a dense network of city rail, metro and trams, the ride from a cheaper district to the centre takes a quarter of an hour, so a base further out is still convenient.
Which stay in Stuttgart suits whom
- First time in Stuttgart. Stuttgart-Mitte is the easiest base, minutes from the Schlossplatz square. From here it is a walk to the Königstraße promenade, the museums and the green-ring parks.
- For the trade fairs. Hotels by the airport and the fairgrounds, or with a fast city-rail link to the centre. Handy when you have a stand or a conference each morning.
- For car fans. Bad Cannstatt near the Mercedes-Benz Museum or Zuffenhausen by the Porsche Museum. From here it is closest to the two icons of Stuttgart motoring.
- For families. Family rooms in mid-range hotels a little outside the centre. Close to the Wilhelma zoo, the planetarium and the TV tower with views over the valley.
- For couples. Boutique hotels in the centre, some with terraces on the hills. Close in the evening to restaurants serving Swabian food and local wine.
- With breakfast. Many hotels in the centre include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for sightseeing or a morning business meeting.

When Stuttgart is at its most expensive
The highest prices come with the spring trade fairs, which make March the most expensive month of the year. Summer can be dear too, when in July the Jazzopen festival draws music stars to the Schlossplatz and the city runs on concerts. In autumn comes the Cannstatter Volksfest, one of the biggest folk festivals in Germany, with wine and beer, when rooms around Bad Cannstatt go fast. The year ends with the Christmas market in the centre. It is calmest and cheapest in August, during the holidays, when fair traffic dies down.
